A NOTE FROM MARIE
The weight of being the strong one
When everyone counts on you, it can be hard to admit that you need room to be cared for, too.
Maybe you are the person people call when something goes wrong. You remember the details, make the plan, and check on everyone afterward. From the outside, it may look as though you have it all together. Inside, you may be wondering when you get to put some of that weight down.
Being dependable can be a meaningful part of who you are. It can also become tiring when there is little space for your own feelings. Sometimes saying “I’m overwhelmed” feels harder than doing one more thing for someone else. You may worry that asking for help will disappoint people who have always known you as the strong one.
I would not ask you to stop caring about the people in your life. I would want to understand what caring has come to require of you, and where your own needs fit. We can talk about the expectations you carry, the ones you choose, and the ones you might be ready to reconsider.
A first step does not have to be dramatic. It might be telling the truth to one trusted person, leaving one task for another day, or simply noticing that you are tired. You deserve a place where you do not have to hold everything together while you speak.
You can bring the part of you that is tired, too.
